Today I found one of our outside kitties, Norbert, had been hit by a car and killed. I had been out running errands and he had been in my in-laws' backyard, playing with the kids and Marshall. We think when I drove home he saw me, and ran across the street to our house, which was probably when he was hit. I walked inside for a few minutes before heading over to my in-laws' house. That's when I found him. I have no doubt that he probably darted in front of the car in his attempt to cross the street. He had a tendency to do that. And I'm grateful that whoever hit him, got out and pulled him out of the street and placed him on the grass before leaving. The kids had just been playing with him 15 minutes before he was killed.
While he was an outside cat, it will be a hard thing to get used to him being gone. Norbert was the kitty that always greeted us when we were outside, whether we were in the driveway or out in the backyard. When we'd take a walk around the neighborhood, he would walk with us the entire way, like a dog. One of our neighbors has a 100% wolf, and he would regularly accompany them on their walks. They loved him.
He was a friendly, in your face kitty, whether you wanted him to be or not. If any of the neighbors left their front door open, he would run into their house as if he lived there. That's part of the reason why there was tension between our next door neighbors and us. They are a dog family and did not like him at all, though our sons are best friends. The only positive thing that can come of this is that it should ease the neighbor tensions between us.
But we will miss our kitty, and the lack of his constant presence will cause a big hole in our lives. We will miss you, sweet Norbert. Thank you for the joy you brought into our lives for the past two years. You will be greatly missed.
