Birthmother's Day

Birthmother's Day was started by a group of birthmothers in Seattle, WA in 1990.  Since birthmothers are the "first mothers" of adopted children, they chose the day before Mother's Day as Birthmother's Day.

It is a day we've always held dear to our hearts as we've celebrated Miss Alexa, the birthmom of our son Seamus for almost 8 years now.  As many of you know, we have an open adoption.  We made this video years ago (with the permission of Alexa) to show what open adoption means for our family.

Every year on Birthmother's Day we send flowers to Alexa and tell her again how much she means to our family.  Today Seamus wanted to make his own video message to her.  It was so sweet, I just had to share.  I love that he will always know who she is, and how much she loves him.  I love that he feels free to celebrate the special bond he has with Alexa.  A few years ago he said, "I was in Miss Alexa's tummy.  That's why she loves me so much!"  Yep, that pretty much sums it up!

We are so blessed to have Alexa in our family.

    1. You know, Sharlene, it started out with putting our son first, but it ended up being a wonderful relationship where we are all truly family. We are so blessed to have her in our lives!
