Old Made New

If a tree falls in a forest when no one is there to hear it, does it still make a sound?

Ok I got another one for you.

If you have a tattoo redone and added to, does it count as a new tattoo? Or do you still have the same number of tattoos as you did before?

Fifteen years ago I got my first tattoo. A Native American shield with feathers hanging down. I picked it off the wall at Sailor Bill's TattooTime. Why did I pick it? Because I didn't want anything "girly" and I've always liked Native American history.

For two years I thought it was pretty cool. I was proud of it. For the past 13 years I desperately wished I had chosen a different design. Part of it was that everyone thought it was a dreamcatcher. IT'S NOT A DREAMCATCHER PEOPLE!!!

I've struggled for years with the idea of what to do with the tattoo. Have it removed so I can tattoo something else on that spot? Or incorporate it into another design that makes it fit better, and if so, what design?

One night I had an epiphany. Why not have a Native American warrior fairy holding the shield? And since she's holding a shield, she should have a weapon in her other hand. Why not make it the slayer scythe so it could be a subtle nod to my love for Buffy. And of course she needs a wolf companion. And that can be my nod to my love for Twilight.

So Friday I went to see my awesome tattoo artist to see what he came up with. I had given him some ideas that I like, including a fairy my friend Susan had drawn for me. He put those all together and used his creative license to make it a masterpiece. It took a full SIX hours in the tattoo chair before it was done. Thanks to my doctor who agreed to call me in some Rx pain relief because otherwise I don't think I would've lasted that long.

So without further ado....

And I absolutely LOVE it! I just keep staring in it. He took something I had come to loathe and turned it into something AMAZING.

Here's my entire upper back currently...

Oh what's that you said? You noticed there's some large gaps between my tattoos? Don't you worry a thing. It's only a matter of time until my entire back is covered. Ha ha....you think I'm kidding. *shakes head no*

  6. Couldn't even begin to dream of putting myself through the pain and torture. Pain by choice is far beyond my realm of understanding. I do have to admit though, he did an amazing job.
